Goal of this Wiki This wiki was created to educate the reader on the policies and the policy makers who are attacking Planned Parenthood. Also this Wiki will discuss the different services that Planned Parenthood offers teens, young adults, and adults and why it is so important it remains open and functioning the way it is.
What is Planned Parenthood?
Planned Parenthood is an organization that offers sexual and reproductive health care and information and advocacy. This organization offers its services to five million men, women, and adolescents world wide.Most of their clients receive measures to avoid pregnancy, testing for STI's, preventative screenings such as pap-smears and breast exams, and abortion services. (1)
Whats Happening? "Planned Parenthood has been at the center of a lot of heated political battles lately. Most center on whether the group, as an abortion provider, should receive government funds for other services it provides, such as offering contraceptives and preventive screenings" (2) So far the only organization that has cut funding to Planned Parenthood is Susan G. Komen for the Cure Charity, this organization cut off hundreds of thousands of dollars that mainly went towards breast examinations. The charity cut off funding because it was unable to support an organization that is under congressional investigation (2).
Why Does This Matter? This is important because without funding Planned Parenthood would cease to exist and young American's would have a much more difficult time getting contraceptives, STD testing, pap-smears and much more.
America and the Government needs to realize that young adults and teens need these services for this reason:
Whats My Plan? My plan is to bring awareness to all of the four local colleges by setting up a table in the most populated area of the campus and allowing students to sign a petition for Planned Parenthood. Also there will be a letter that I will send to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Charity explaining why it is important Planned Parenthood receives their funding for breast examinations.
How Will I Do This? I will contact the head of Student Life/Student Affairs at each University and find out when and if I can table and where it would be reasonable. I will also advertise all over each of the colleges by hanging flyer's explaining why I will be there, what I will be doing and when they can find me to help the cause.
